How to Play

Basic Rules

  • Objective: Checkmate your opponent's king
  • Turns: White moves first, then players alternate
  • Moving: Click a piece to select it, then click a valid square to move
  • Capturing: Move your piece to a square occupied by an opponent's piece

Piece Movement

  • ♟ Pawn: Moves forward one square (two on first move), captures diagonally
  • ♜ Rook: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically
  • ♞ Knight: Moves in an L-shape (2 squares + 1 square perpendicular)
  • ♝ Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally
  • ♛ Queen: Moves any number of squares in any direction
  • ♚ King: Moves one square in any direction

Special Moves

  • Castling: King moves two squares toward a rook, rook moves to the other side (conditions apply)
  • En Passant: Special pawn capture (implemented in advanced rules)
  • Promotion: Pawn reaching the opposite end becomes a queen automatically

Game Status

  • Check: King is under attack (must be resolved)
  • Checkmate: King is in check with no legal moves (game over)
  • Stalemate: No legal moves available but not in check (draw)
